Philosophy

The firm was founded in 1958 as Sedgewick & Associates, later Sedgewick, Sellers, & Associates, Waterstreet Design, P.C., and finally changed to Sedgewick & Ferweda Architects, without change in philosophy or integrity. The firm represents a tradition of over fifty years of providing quality Architectural services to our community and has been responsible for over one billion dollars (current value) of building construction in-place. The work has encompassed a variety of building and structure types, and represents a continuous record of accomplishments. This background is at the disposal of each of our clients. The updated firm will still provide quality Architectural services to our existing clients, without a change in philosophy or integrity.

Our aim, as originally directed by Tom Sedgewick Sr., and maintained by all of us here, is to be a professional group whose purpose is to translate their clients’ desires and wishes into reality. The reality of a humane, pleasing environment, sustainable, economical of construction, budgetable, while accomplishing the client’s intents and desires.

Senior Project Manager

Steve has been with the firm for more than thirty years. He has been developing and nourishing his knowledge and expertise since joining the firm in 1978. He is the Sr. Project Manager for educational, residential, recreational, and commercial design projects. These projects have included individual houses, apartments and townhouses, office buildings, stores, shopping center stores, restaurants and schools. Versed in Mechanical, Plumbing and Electrical design, Steve leads our Technical Design Team. Showing his talent and versatility he also handles our Landscape Design. He has managed and operated his own building company known as Great Lakes Gunite, that designs and builds specialty concrete structures. Projects have included swimming pools, miniature golf, water displays, and zoological structures locally and internationally.

Jeffrey S. Ferweda, AIA
Principal in Charge / Quality Control Manager

Jeff brings a personal enthusiasm and excitement for design to the firm. Fostered with more than fifteen years of experience in architecture and architectural related arenas, his creative visions have been realized and brought to fruition in the form of financial, industrial, commercial, medical and recreational facilities projects. He can also be credited with an academic background in renaissance art and architecture, as well as an interest in Italian culture and sculpture fostered during his studies in the Florence / Volterra Italian Study Abroad Program through the University of Detroit. He also currently sits on the Alumni Curriculum committee for the University of Detroit Mercy – School of Architecture. Jeff has proven himself to be highly skilled and proficient in meeting the unique demands of various project types. His responsibilities include, but are certainly not limited to design and design development.

Thomas J. Sedgewick
Senior Project Manager

Tom has twenty years of experience since joining the firm in 1988. He is a Sr. Project Manager for commercial, residential, religious and institutional design projects. Versed in Structural and Spatial Design, Tom leads complex projects from conception to final construction and occupancy. His ability to coordinate the Client’s program and needs into a finished designed environment that is both aesthetically and economically viable, is his greatest asset. This ability is employed throughout the construction process providing the Owner/Client with the experience required to coordinate the necessary contractors, government agencies, suppliers and related professionals for a completed project. Tom’s talents have and will continue to be utilized to provide the firm’s Clients an asset to fulfill their unique and varied building projects.

Michael J. Murphy
Project Manager

Michael’s work experience has provided him with a specialization in three fields of work; medical, automotive research and development and residential architecture. In his twenty years of work experience, he has designed and project managed over seventy kidney dialysis clinics throughout the Midwest, designed and project managed over 12 million dollars for the development of automotive testing centers and has designed over eighty residences throughout the State of Michigan. His passion for design and for the detailed development of functional architecture, have provided a long lasting relationship with his clients.
